Successful furniture flip aside.. I'm even more excited to get it out of my home. The pictures on Kijiji led me to believe the parts that were not burgundy were white and they were more... Yellow. The kind of yellow even Javex couldn't fix. So instead of 'just doing the drawers' it needed a complete makeover and then some. Took a lot more time than I expected!!!

Before I write a whole post ranting about how much I love the final product I wanted to share some of the stuff I used and experimenting I did first.

I have been wanting to try making my own chalk paint. Annie Sloan is "the" brand right now it seems. If you are from Nova Scotia the only retailer here is The Rusty Hinge in the Hydrostone Market. This is news to me, I haven't been yet but when I do go I will probably blog rant about it!
Why is chalk paint soooo awesome? Well for one... the coverage is great - it doesn't ever require three or four coats... usually always one or two. Less used.. Less bought. For two (and most importantly) it requires little to no prep!!! No stripping, heavy sanding, moisturizing etc. Since it is a textured paint and since it is so thick - it will grip and conceal. I've seen projects on Pinterest where people paint leather and fabric upholstery.. it's that good!
So on the topic of making my own.. The go-to recipe on Pinterest was (hands down) to mix any paint with Plaster of Paris (a dry wall compound). This was most popular and people described it to be virtually the exact same quality as Annie Sloan. However I am impatient... and all I had on hand which seemed to be an ok alternative was Baking Soda and I'm pretty happy with the results! I didn't weather it (age it) at all so maybe that why the quality of the paint worked great for the project.
Pinterest is aways bringing me back to this Mom blogger's page. She has great tips in this post on making your own chalk paint and using Vaseline before to help with the weathering process.
I mixed about 2 table spoons for every cup of paint and I used a High traffic white from Wal Mart. This piece is going to be used as a Makeup Vanity so I needed a paint that could hold up to cleaning products.
As I would with any chalk paint I finished it with a wax to keep the matte finish and protect the paint. When I did my kitchen table trade and flip I used a wax specific for dark stain and paint. I used the same brand this time but colorless. If I use a new brand that I like better I'll let ya know, but for now this is what I spend my money on!
Recognize the hardware? Probably, definitely not lol. I spray painted left over hardware from my Kitchen Flip at home. I posted about them here a while ago in an attempt to make them look like iron.
These were old brassy / wooden $1 handles that I found at the Habitat for Humaity Re-store. I saw potential so naturally I bought lots and lots of them :).
So, I knew I wanted to do this Vanity white and gold. That's all I knew starting.. and when I sought out inspiration I found this and only this, love it!! She also gives some valuable tips on painting furniture, check it out!
Now what kind of Scentsy Consultant would I be if I didn't recommend a warmer that goes perfectly with this?
This whole line of warmers are right up my alley.... I'm a crow when it comes to the gold!
You can now shop through the Scentsy tab on the blog, hope you have an awesome day!
