Making Peace with Recliners

Let me start by saying that this is an example of what I would want my seating to look like in a luxury plane or ever better.. a movie theatre. There is nothing appealing to the eye and if you haven't gathered already, this is a pretty biased post about furniture (possibly sexist).

But all bias aside, it's common for male/female couples to come to see me to furnish their first home and the male b-lines it to the power reclining furniture while the female is rolling her eyes like "not happening". What is that?! I can't tell you the science behind it but it seems one is always more concerned with the esthetics while the other is focused on comfort.

I have to agree that most average motion furniture tends to be large scale, and no furniture in your main living space should have cup holders but compromise doesn't have to be tragic ;).

So to expand on that statement here are some things to think about when buying motion furniture and making existing motion furniture work with your space without it overpowering the room. All the examples I'm using are Ashley product because I'm most familiar with their manufacturing.

When purchasing new, first and foremost - Think material. How is it being used? How often? Are the pets welcome on the furniture? You can't go wrong with top grain leather because it gets softer with time and the maitence is unbeatable. Never skimp for PVC or bonded leather when it comes to recliners because the constant motion will cause it to crack or peel faster than usual.

The Banetonville is a beautiful top grain leather option. The color is called metal so it has tones of grey and copper. Most importantly it's stiched with nice clean horizontal lines and the arms aren't "over stuffed". Think clean lines [and less of them] - very important with ensuring it doesn't cause too much visual clutter that distracts from other things in the room. Making this a two seat instead of three didn't take away from the seating space but esthetically looks 100% better. Notice the difference between this option and the first.

In the Ashley Furniture world the matching Loveseat for motion furniture will almost always have a console. If it's going in your living space - say no to consoles! My solution for this is usually to do two sofas instead, or a "chair and a half" and an accent chair. Don't be shy with an accent chair, it should be big enough to balance out the sofa and something unique to distract. I picked the Berwyn chair here because the nail head trim compliments the "metal" color of the sofa and the side table brings some character.

Also, Think clearance. No, not the section at the back of the furniture store with used and damaged product.. clearance as in the space you have to use in your living room. Regardless if the piece fits as it is - motion furniture requires being at least a foot away from the wall.. usually. Look for recliners that are "Zero Clearance". This means it is designed to still recline even when tight to the wall, also the lever to recline will been in between the seat cushion and the arm to maximize space for a coffee table.

The Overly is very similar to the Banetonville in structure but it's 100% polyester. Think Color - I always claim this "smoke" as the magic color because it has undertones of grey and brown so it will compliment almost any other furniture in the space. If light colored fabrics scare you - buy yourself a green machine so you can live guilt free.

Rachel from Beautiful Treasures Blog owns the Overly sofa and dodged the bulky loveseat/console by pairing it with a stationary sofa instead. Seating doesn't all have to match! Her pillows compliment other things in the room and the Overly just acts as a canvas, love this living room! I can only imagine how cozy it is in action.

This is a great solution for anybody that currently has a reclining sofa set that they're itching to update. Consider putting the loveseat in the basement or spare room and updating one piece of seating in the room instead of both!

Supply and demand must be catching on because recliners are getting "prettier". The Austere is new to Ashley furniture and has a rolled arm with nail head trim. Although this material is fabric it has polyurethane built in so it can be easily cleaned and looks similar to suede or aged leather. If you read my last post about my best sellers for 2015 - you've heard me rave about this stuff!

Think manual or power - Most motion furniture is available in power, which everyone prefers! Manual recliners usually click in place to 3 positions, where as power can be positioned how ever you want. Not to mention vivid memories of getting stuck in recliners when I was pregnant because I didn't have the leg power to get out. Ha ha very funny! But realistically recliners accommodate to lots of needs for people who suffer injuries or pain and not having it in power defeats every purpose.

Hopefully this is beneficial to anybody trying to incorporate motion furniture into their home. With everything there is to see, it helps to have some help when you invest in furnishing your home. E-mail me to book a consultation!

2015 Best Sellers

So as you can see I'm not the most avid blogger in the world. I also work full time in the furniture industry and the hype of the Black Friday and Boxing Day sales are finally dying down. With product having such a long trip here from Pennsylvania it takes some time to get things made, on a truck and into the clients home. Now that life is settling back down I plan to incorporate my day job more with this blog. It adds to my focus and I genuinely love helping people make their houses homes!

This has been an interesting year. Coming back from maternity leave I was faced with the challenge to balance work, and family life for the first time. I had a really hard time but I gained some of my most favorite clients and it turns out that already - my experiences with motherhood combined with my knowledge of the industry has made me more confident in what I do.

I definitely have my own taste in furniture but despite that I had some best sellers this year (by a long haul).. I always find it interesting to see whats trending, numbers don't lie!

Here are my 2015 best sellers..

Bedroom

The Sorinella

The Sorinella Upholstered Headboard, Footboard and Rails

This bed won and than beat the others while they were down. The perk to upholstery? You don't have to update your dresser or night tables.

Dining

The Tanshire

Tanshire Dining Table, Chairs, Server and Hutch

Definitely my best selling high end dining set. The removable leaf is a big selling feature. These chairs are part of the Tanshire collection but it's not uncommon to mix and match!

Runner Up.....

The Alonzo

This table comes in dining height and counter height and it's best feature is the butterfly leaf! Butterfly leafs store within  the table so you don't need to store them elsewhere. Note: The WORST (and most common) place you could store a removable leaf is beside the fridge or in the garage. The temperature and/or moisture levels will cause it to warp or crack. This is what makes butterfly leafs so great!

The Alonzo collection has matching chairs and a bench - It's nice to see something a little different having a bench with a back. However, like the Tanshire this table can be paired with any chairs your heart desires! Two tone dining tables are safer to pair with other items in your home that you fear might clash.

Sofa / Sectional

Chamberly

Chamberly 3 Piece
There was a tie for sectionals this year! First is the Chamberly, like most sectionals it's like a puzzle. You configure it to your space. Some clients loved the down filled throw pillows, some had them covered.. Either way they are complimentary.

Chamberly 4 Piece

For those who did love the pillows, there are two ottomans made to match.

Tied with....

The Alenya

The Alenya tied with the Chamberly for top selling sectional so it's the contemporary arm for the win this year! (Call me old fashioned but I prefer a rolled arm).
Alenya 2 Piece Sectional in Charcoal
The Alenya doesn't have as many options for configurations, but it's L shape can be lengthened.

Alenya 3 Piece Sectional in Charcoal

It also comes in a Linen color!

Alenya 3 Piece in Quarts

Sofa

Kaylor

Lots of people had their hearts set on sectionals this year but for those who were open to a sofa / loveseat the Kaylor was most popular. There are three types of "leather"; The entirely fake stuff - made of vinyl, Bonded - made of scrap pieces of leather melted to another piece of fabric, and top grain leather.
Kaylor Sofa in Quarry
This one is a bonded so it's in the middle of the spectrum in terms of quality but the price and the maintenance is magnificent. I hate to put pets and babies in the same category, but in the furniture world - they are.. and bonded leather is the best way to incorporate light colors in a pet/baby/kid friendly home.
Kaylor Sofa in Taupe

I love giving people options and besides the two neutral colors it comes in, there is a stand alone chair and a recliner chair to match the collection.

Thank you for reading! I'm having my biggest sale this weekend so e-mail me if you have any questions about measurements, pricing or a book a consultation.

Ewe Boots - A Local Christmas

My lovely friend Stephanie (& coincidentally my Makers Market date) took some pictures of us in the fall and got these great shots of Ava's Ewe boots.

Does she not have the best little hands?

Ewe boots are locally handmade slipper boots for children and adults using recycled quality materials(wool, cashmere, leather). I got Ava's pair at the Etsy Maritime Makers Market, blogged about it here if you're interested!

These are the Ewe boots on my wish list :)

Owner, Jaqueline MacDougall makes all these booties and sells them in one of her Etsy shops (visit here). Her earth conscious life style and her sons rare condition was the start to salvaging old sweaters and jackets to make these cozy slippers with care using materials that don't irritate the skin.

Go shop and read more and Jaqueline's story on her Etsy page! She also has another shop called Hug a Bug with some extra cute accessories that are on A-Babys Christmas list *hint* *hint*.

The little wooden figurines you see in the photos are from the Black Market in Halifax and are currently on their list of holiday gifts under $5!

Try to spread some local joy this Christmas! May it be a small reminder that we all work hard to balance and provide for our loved ones especially this time of year.

Thank you for reading!
